This year's Virginia women's tennis team is making a habit of rewriting the record books. Two weeks after defeating No. 10 Duke -- then the highest ranked opponent the Cavaliers had ever beaten -- Virginia knocked off No. 6 Miami Sunday.
After falling behind 3-0 early, the Cavaliers rallied back to take the match 4-3.
"It's a great day for Virginia tennis," coach Mark Guilbeau said. "This is really good for our overall program. These are humongous wins that I don't think anyone expected this program to win. I hope the team realizes how special these kind of times are."
Virginia was able to defeat the Hurricanes even without senior Douglas Wink. Wink defeated the No. 2 player in the country earlier this year.
Sophomore Lindsey Pereira sealed the win with a 6-7 7-5 6-1 over Patricia Starzyk. With impressive wins over top-10 competition in the books, the Cavaliers will look to do more damage in the upcoming ACC Tournament.
"Considering it was Senior Day and the last home match for the four seniors, to be able to beat the No. 6 team was amazing," Pereira said. "We're now expecting to be in [ACC] Tournament and do really well. After today, the team is ready and prepared to stay focused and finish out the season real strong."
For Guilbeau, the win over Miami was a sign of the team's determination and focus throughout the season.
"I don't think we're trying to prove anything to anybody now, we're trying to prove it to ourselves -- hard work pays off," Guilbeau said.
