Barry F. Thompson, former University police officer, pleads guilty to grand larceny in Olsson theft
Former University Police Officer Barry Thompson pled guilty Tuesday to grand larceny for stealing digital camera from the School of Engineering at the University.
The camera, which was valued at $816, was found in Thompson's home during a police search.
"Thompson admitted that the camera was stolen and that it was wrong to take it," said Fluvanna County Commonwealth's Attorney Jeff Haislip, who served as the special prosecutor for the case.
The search was initiated after an employee at Ollson Hall in the Systems Engineering Department noticed missing equipment. He set up a motion activated camera which later recorded video footage of Thompson entering the employee's office, reaching under the desk, and putting something under his jacket. Thompson was wearing his police uniform during the theft.
Thompson, who had been a well-respected member of the force, pled guilty and was sentenced to 5 years in prison. The jail time was suspended for one year of supervised probation and 5 years of good behavior.
