Homicide suspect died from self-inflicted gunshot wound in Florida shootout

An autopsy revealed William T. Ashby, the Georgia man who was suspected of killing graduate Education student Elizabeth "Lizzy" Hafter, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Ashby died during a shootout with police officers Sunday, according to Dr. Terrence Steiner, district medical examiner for St. John's County.

Ashby also suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the chest in the shootout which followed a car chase that ended near St. Augustine, Fla.

Hafter's body was discovered on the Blue Ridge Parkway, according to the FBI.

University administrators believe Hafter drove out on the Parkway to study over the weekend.

Hafter also completed undergraduate work in drama and history at the University, earning a bachelor's degree last May.
