U.Va. launches new program for employees

University Human Resources will institute a new 13-week employee development program beginning Feb. 21 to help its participants sharpen teamwork and conflict resolution skills, as well as other abilities, human resources trainer Margaret Reitz explained.

Reitz said the skills pinpointed by the program, which is titled Essential WorkSkills: Steps to Success in Your Job, will translate into better performance in the workplace.

According to a human resources press release, the program is aimed at University employees with a minimum of six months employment and a satisfactory performance rating.

Chief Human Resources Officer Susan Carkeek said this program is meant to foster continuous learning among University staff. If successful, Essential WorkSkills will be offered to future employees on a regular basis, Carkeek added.

"Career development is a constant quest," she said.

Carkeek said there were 224 nominees for the program; however, space did not permit all applicants to be accepted. She described nomination for the program as a type of recognition from employees' supervisors.

Nominees are required to have a "contributor" rating, designating good work performance. Carkeek said this system is designed to reward employees and encourage them to stay with the University.

"It's an investment in our people," she added.

Reitz said the program poses no cost to its participants. Instead, she noted that successful completion of the program will result in a one-time, base salary increase of $600 per year for participants.

Carkeek said funding for this program will come from the University's central operating budget, while individual departments will fund the employee pay raise.

The program was developed with the assistance of AchieveGlobal, an international employee training company.
