U.Va. Teen Health Program to expand community outreach thanks to new funds

The University's Teen Health Program is expanding its community outreach efforts following recent fundraising efforts and an anonymous donation.

The key component of the community outreach is to heighten advocacy for teens in public policy, according to Dyan Aretakis, program director of the Teen Health Center. Aretakis added, however, that a specific concern of the program is the discussion of abstinence education.

"We don't want to withhold vaccines, emergency contraception or education from teens," Aretakis said. "Educating children about these issues is an important part of being a parent."

Aretakis added that she hopes the program will expand to other schools in the area with participation from University students.

"I would love to have a relationship between [the] Teen Health program and the University Student Health Center Peer Educator program so that our peer educators can learn from University students," Aretakis said.
