New StudCo president takes office

At her first meeting as Student Council president, Lauren Tilton co-sponsored a resolution recommending the current pavilion selection process be reviewed and altered to include additional student input.

"Our goal is to hopefully promote a meaningful discussion about the Lawn -- its ideals and what the Lawn represents today," Tilton said. "Our interest in the Lawn pavilion selection process is making sure that the processes are clear, as well as making sure that student-self governance and student input are part of the picture."

Tilton said enabling the head resident of the Lawn to join the Gray-Carrington scholarship winner, currently the only student who participates in the process, in serving on the selection committee would help assure such student involvement. Tilton also emphasized that the resolution is not aimed at any particular person.

"The important thing is that the resident is able to contribute and interact in the University community on a daily basis," Tilton said. "The Lawn affects everybody, it affects who we are and how we imagine ourselves to be."

Tilton officially took over as Student Council president yesterday, replacing outgoing president Darius Nabors. Tilton also began her term as president by acknowledging the "great work" done by the members of Student Council.

"I know that this is thankless work," Tilton said. "But I really believe that although students don't always know how things, they do appreciate it."

Tilton also emphasized that she hopes Council members will become involved in working with the new executive officers to make the University community better.

"We want you to tell us when we are doing something right and when we are doing something wrong," Tilton said. "Become involved. Don't let your vision leave with you."

Also sworn in at the transition ceremony were Executive Vice President Melissa Warnke, Vice President of Administration Jack Wilson and Vice President of Organizations Catherine Tobin.

Before officially swearing in his replacement, Nabors took a few minutes to talk to all members of Student Council about the importance of their involvement.

"There are opportunities to do a lot of things if you choose to do them," Nabors said.
