Two fire-related incidents occurred on Grounds Saturday, one occurring in Newcomb Hall and the other in the Maupin dormitory on Alderman Road.
Shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday, a fire was reported in Newcomb near a window where painters were working.
"Upon arrival, the [fire department] found several painters going up and down ladders on the exterior of the building [and] there was evidently fire around the window of the building," said Rick Crickenberger, Charlottesville Fire Department battalion chief. "The fire department advised the paint crew to come down, then went to the interior of the building to where the window was and found there was a small amount of fire around the window."
According to Crickenberger, the fire department extinguished the fire and ventilated the building.
The fire report does not state the exact cause of the fire, though it was deemed to be unintentional, according to Crickenberger, and the property damage is estimated at $4,000.
Saturday night, another fire-related incident was reported at Maupin, and residents were evacuated.
"The captain arrived on scene; they reported steam was coming from the roof of Maupin House, and they secured the area and waited for maintenance to arrive," Crickenberger said. "Facilities said a gasket had ruptured, and the steam coming from the roof was a normal operation."
The situation was then turned over to facilities management. As a result of the ruptured gasket, Maupin residents were unable to re-enter their residence for several hours.
"[The evacuation} lasted about three hours, from about eight to 11 p.m.," Maupin resident Sarah Stickley said.
