Men's soccer: Virginia waits to learn fate

The fate of the Virginia men's soccer team's season will be determined during tonight's NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship selection show.

Despite losing to Boston College in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship Tournament last week, Virginia, currently ranked No. 21 in the Division I Men's Soccer Poll, is expected to receive a bid this evening.

Although the Cavaliers have struggled to win their ACC contests, their losing conference record should be evaluated in context. Six of the nine ACC teams are ranked in the top 25, three of which are among the top 10.

The 2006 Virginia squad was the first to make it to the College Cup, soccer's version of the Final Four, in recent memory. Although this year's team has struggled somewhat, the Cavaliers are not discounting a repeat performance just yet.

The University of North Carolina will host the semifinal and final rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The hosts of the initial rounds of the tournament will be announced along with the bracket.
