The University's Varsity Hall, built in 1858 as an infirmary, will house the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy beginning in mid-February.
David Breneman, director of the Batten School's Public Policy program, said Varsity Hall will serve as a temporary location for the recently created school.
"It's a lovely old building with three stories and fireplaces in many of the rooms," Breneman said. "Our final resting place, though, in roughly 2010, will be Garrett Hall."
Throughout the years, Varsity Hall has served a variety of purposes, from fraternity house to Board of Visitors meeting place to ROTC center. In 2005, the building was moved almost 200 feet to make way for other University building projects, and it has since been renovated.
Breneman added that after the Batten School moves out of Varsity Hall and into Garret Hall, another University occupant will take its place, as the historically-significant building is once again a permanent, functioning piece of the University community.
