Finalists for the student position on the Board of Visitors are scheduled to appear before the Executive Committee of the Board next Wednesday before the representative is selected by Feb. 8.
According to Board Secretary Sandy Gilliam, the Board is looking for "someone who is representative of the student body ... someone who can reliably go back to the student body and explain things the Board has done."
Carey Mignerey, the Board's current student member, also noted the student member's responsibility to communicate students' interests and perspectives to the Board. This student, according to Mignerey, should have "an ability to articulate intelligently a perspective on student issues, an ability to connect and relate with students throughout the University ... and the ability to gain the trust and confidence of the Board members."
The application process for the position began with an online application, which was sent to a student screening committee that "reads through the applications and selects a handful to interview," Mignerey said.
Third-year College student David Newsome, one of five remaining finalists, noted that the student committee conducting preliminary interviews consisted of "the leaders of some prominent U.Va. organizations [and] other groups."
Selection committee member Lauren Tilton, Student Council president, said the goal was to find "students who have a range of different perspectives of the University, students who are in tune with the priorities, issues and concerns of the University."
One applicant no longer in the running for the position noted that the selection process was "enjoyable in that it solicited honest opinions about what we thought the future of the University should be."
Newsome also noted his satisfaction with the means of selection.
"I think it's a good process because it involves students," he said.
According to Gilliam, the student selected for the position will have all the privileges of an appointed member, except the right to vote, which is prohibited by law.
