The Cavalier Daily held its annual elections in Jefferson Hall Saturday to choose the organization's 119th Managing Board, Senior Board and Junior Board, who began their term of office yesterday.
Third-year College student Elizabeth Mills was elected editor-in-chief after having served as the paper's previous chief financial officer. Mills said her plan for the next year involves improving efficiency and pertinence to readers.
"We want to make sure that every paper we produce is something students want to pick up," she said. "We want to improve communication and increase transparency in tangible ways. We plan to implement a readership panel to aid our staff in their work."
The other members of the 119th Managing Board include third-year College student Daniel Colbert, who served as Opinion editor before being elected executive editor; third-year College student Kristin Hawkins, a previous assistant managing editor now serving as managing editor; third-year College student Steve Austin, a former Life and copy associate editor who was elected chief financial officer; and second-year College student Andrew Baker, who previously was a Production editor before being elected operations manager.
Members of the new staff's Senior Board include second-year College student Cait Speaker, a former News associate editor who was elected to one of the two assistant managing editor positions. The other AME is third-year College student Conor Wakeman, who has previously served as an associate Sports editor and as a copy associate editor. Engineering graduate student Tyson Baldridge was re-elected director of information technology, a job he has held for the past two years, and third-year Architecture student Colleen Barrett, who formerly served on the advertising staff, undertook the position of ads manager.
The Cavalier Daily's Junior Board was also elected Saturday.
Two second-year College students, Thomas Madrecki and Christina Brown, were selected as News editors. Both Madrecki and Brown previously served the paper as associate News editors.
The Sports editors for the 2008-09 term are Aaron Perryman and J.P. Stroman, also second-year College students who represented their section as associate editors in the past year.
Third-year College student Lindsey Huggins and third-year College student Stephen Parsley are the new Opinion editors; they formerly served as an Opinion columnist and an Opinion senior associate editor, respectively.
Third-year Architecture student Laura Hammett, third-year College student Lauren Tindall and first-year College student Amanda Morgan manage the Production department. Hammett is returning to the department for her second term as Production editor.
The Life section is now overseen by second-year College students Lauren Caldwell and Kelly Underwood. Caldwell served last year as the senior Life associate editor, and Underwood served as an associate Life editor. Second-year College students Daniel Tarjan and Bobby Grasberger will oversee the Photo department. Grasberger is reassuming his position from last year, and Tarjan previously served as senior Photo associate editor.
Second-year College student Stephanie Garcia and third-year College student Ethan Hamlin, both of whom served last year as associate tableau editors, were selected for their section's two editor positions.
Third-year College student Marissa D'Orazio was chosen to lead the Health & Sexuality weekly section of the paper, and second-year College student Matt Dickey, previously an associate News editor, now serves as editor of the Focus section.
Second-year College students Veronica Gutierrez and Selina Cormier were elected editors of the Nation & World section.
Non-elected senior associate editor positions were also announced this weekend: fourth-year College student Christa Byker, Opinion; second-year College student Paul Montana, Sports; third-year College student Lindsey Wagner, Life; third-year Engineering student Tallie Faircloth, Photo; and second-year College student Stephen Belyea, Production.
According to former Editor-in-Chief Herb Ladley, confidence in the new staff is already running high, and the coming year is sure to build and improve upon the last.
"I think they are going to do a great job," Ladley said.
