The Virginia men's tennis team opens its season Sunday against William & Mary as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's preseason No. 1 team. The Cavaliers return five starters from last year's team that finished the season ranked No. 2 nationally. Major contributors to the Cavaliers' run at a national championship this year include senior Somdev Devvarman, who enters the season as the nation's top individual player, Dominic Inglot, who comes into his junior year as the nation's third-ranked player, and senior Treat Huey who is No. 12 in the preseason individual rankings.
Devvarman earned the nation's preseason top seed after winning last year's individual championship and going 13-1 during fall play on his way to an ITA Indoor crown. Inglot, meanwhile, was given the No. 3 seed after downing three top-10 players during the ITA Indoor Championship and winning the ITA Mideast Regional singles championship. Huey earned his spot in the top 15 by winning his division of the Virginia Fall Invitational. He also reached the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships before being beaten by University of Southern California sophomore Robert Farah.
The Cavaliers enter the season with a strong set of doubles teams as well. Devvarman and Huey will share the court for Virginia as the nation's No. 1 doubles team, according to the ITA's preseason rankings. The two won the ITA All-American doubles championship in the fall after downing junior Jonas Berg and senior Erling Tveit of Mississippi in the final. Sophomore Lee Singer and senior Ted Angelinos enter the season as the No. 18 doubles team, while sophomore Houston Barrick and Inglot have been recognized as the No. 25 pair. Also making the top 30 for Virginia are freshmen Michael Shabaz and Sanam Singh, who come in as the No. 28 duo.
Virginia opens play Sunday when the Cavaliers host the Tribe. The Cavs follow their season opener with consecutive away matches at the University of Illinois and Notre Dame before returning home to play Virginia Commonwealth Feb. 1.
