ITC to begin implementing new e-mail services

University Information Technology and Communications will begin to transition student e-mail services to Google and Microsoft applications later this month.

According to James Hilton, vice president and chief information officer of ITC, University students and faculty will receive a notice through their current University WebMail containing a Web site link that will prompt students to choose either Google or Microsoft as their new e-mail provider.

"Shortly after a student has chosen a provider, they will log into WebMail and be redirected to whichever provider they have chosen," Hilton said.

A link to student e-mail will remain on the University of Virginia's home page, Hilton added. Students will log in as usual, he said, but they will then automatically be linked to either Google or Microsoft Live.

Hilton said ITC plans to complete the switch by the end of the semester.

"If everyone attempted to switch at the same time the system would be flooded; therefore, it will be a gradual process throughout the semester," Hilton explained. "Everyone will be transitioned by the end of final exercises this spring."
