Local Serial rapist sentenced for life

Serial rapist Antonio Washington, who has been linked to seven sexual assaults since 1997 in central Virginia, was sentenced to multiple life terms yesterday, according to Charlottesville Police Chief Tim Longo.

"He was sentenced to life terms ... [and] for all intents and purposes will spend the rest of his life in jail," Longo said.

Longo said that while he did not attend the sentencing, he understood that Washington expressed his apologies to the families of the victims.

Longo added that Washington's sentence will have an impact on the Charlottesville community and especially on the University community.

"We've felt the University to be the very heart of where this defender was striking [and] to bring this case to where he has [been sentenced] has brought a sense of relief to the community," Longo said. "It brings a sense of justice to the community for these tragedies."
