NAE honors professor for life research

University Prof. John Hudson, the Wills Johnson Professor of Chemical Engineering, was elected to the National Academy of Engineering Friday in recognition of his work in the complexities in chemical and biological systems.

According to Chemical Engineering Department Chair Robert Davis, Hudson is an internationally recognized leader in his field.

"This is a great honor for Jack and particularly timely for the chemical engineering department to have an esteemed leader in the field recognized at the time of [its] centennial," he said.

According to Lance Davis, executive officer of the NAE, election to the organization is a recognition that celebrates the lifetime achievements of an individual engineer.

"We are the world's largest and most proficient think tank," Lance Davis said. "Being elected is an honor and a call to service."

According to Engineering Dean James Aylor, NAE members are recognized as the experts on issues relating to public policy in science and technology.

"Being a member of the NAE is considered to be one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon an individual, mainly because it's [bestowed] by his or her peers," Aylor said.

According to Hudson, he is grateful for the acknowledgment he received through his admission to the NAE.

"It's very gratifying to be singled out by my peers," Hudson said. "I'm thankful to all my students and colleagues who have contributed to the work that we've been doing."

Hudson's recent research focuses on a field of study concerning "anything that is rhythmic, changing as a function of time," Hudson said, noting that his laboratory work is centered on the dynamics and reactions of organisms with a wide perspective.

"The main thing we do is look at collective dynamics of populations of things, for example reacting sites," Hudson said. "We're interested in how the ensemble can behave and what types of different behavior can occur that cannot occur in just one of the individual entities."

According to Aylor, Hudson is not the first University engineering professor to be admitted to the academy; he said the Engineering School faculty has 10 members in the NAE.

"The Engineering School is percentage-wise one of the largest engineering schools in the country relative to their membership in the National Academy," Aylor said.
