Robbery reported in Newcomb Hall

About $400 was stolen from the C3 convenience store in Newcomb Hall Wednesday morning, according to a University police report.

"It was a breaking and entering," University Police Lieut. Melissa Fielding said.

According to Fielding, the case is open and active, and nobody has been indicted in the case yet.

"We have not charged anyone," Fielding said. "We are investigating the case, we do thoroughly and actively follow up on leads, but as of this particular date and time, there have been no official charges filed."

According to Dining Director Brent Beringer, the money was stolen around 4 a.m. from the cash drawer.

Beringer said this is a minor incident and noted there are no current plans to renovate the security system.

"We've installed a new safe but other than that I don't think much else will change ... The spaces and the valuables are locked each night," he said, adding that the "locks have been tested; they are not as secure as hoped."

There were security cameras in place at the time the breaking and entering occurred, Fielding noted.

"It looks like there was a camera in place and we have viewed that video," she said. "Whether that has been used to identify the person responsible I don't know."

Beringer said he believes University Police have apprehended a suspect, but Fielding declined to comment on this potential development in the case.

Fielding added breaking and entering has not been a common problem in Newcomb Hall or the surrounding areas.

"In recent history I cannot remember anything similar to this happening," she said.

Beringer also said he thinks this break-in was a unique occurrence.

"This is really kind of one of those ... things that we don't expect to happen again," Beringer said.

Fielding would not comment as to the specific security measures in place in Newcomb since "they can be worked around," but said "the University overall is pretty concerned about safety and security and makes a conscious effort to implement security measures"
