University employees contribute most in Virginia

The University received an award of excellence yesterday for being the top contributor in the commonwealth to the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign, a giving campaign for commonwealth employees.

The University gave $888,888, up about $73,000 from last year, CVC Program Manager Anne Dinterman said, with the help of 2,798 donors, or about 40 percent of the University's employees.

The campaign allows state employees to give back to their communities, Dinterman said, and donors can choose which charities their money will benefit.

Donations have increased more than $330,000 since 2000, when the University gave about $550,000 to the campaign, said Ida Lee Wootten, University director of community relations.

The top five charities designated by University employees, Wootten noted, are the Charlottesville Free Clinic, the United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area, the Charlottesville-Albemarle Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Thomas Jefferson Area Food Bank and Hospice of the Piedmont, all of which are in the Charlottesville-Albemarle area.

"If you look at those top five, I think it's easy to understand why employee participation in the CVC has grown steadily over the years," Wootten said. "With so many charities included in the campaign, it's easy to find programs or causes that match employees' interest and needs."

Wootten said the University held a luncheon yesterday to recognize employees who have been generous with both the CVC and the United Way Laurence E. Richardson Day of Caring, a day during which University employees participate in more than 200 community service projects.

University CVC Honorary Chair Larry Sabato? said the University should be proud of its generosity.

"One out of every five dollars came from the University of Virginia staff and employees, and that's remarkable," Sabato said, "In our community and our state, I think the University came through with flying colors, and we're all just delighted about it"
