University football player arrested, removed from team

Junior cornerback Mike Brown is no longer a member of the University football team because of pending criminal charges, according to a released statement by Virginia coach Al Groh.

Brown was arrested for an incident involving approximately $3,400 worth of stolen goods in the Central Grounds parking garage Feb. 6, University Police Lieut. Melissa Fielding said.

According to Fielding, Brown was charged Feb. 29 and released later that day on bond.

"He was officially charged with one count grand larceny, one count of possession of stolen property with intent to sell, one count altering serial numbers and one count possession of marijuana," she added.

Groh stated in the release that he is taking the allegations very seriously.

"At this time we are currently gathering the facts," Groh stated in the release. "In view of the nature of the allegation, Mike Brown is not participating with the program at this time."

Brown did not play during the 2007 season because of an ACL injury, but he started every game during his first two years at the University.
