Corner Bank of America robbed

The Charlottesville Police Department took a suspect into custody following a robbery yesterday afternoon at the University Avenue branch of Bank of America. The FBI and police are continuing to investigate the crime, and the suspect has refused to identify himself to authorities.

Charlottesville Police Lieut. Gary Pleasants said a white male, estimated to be in his mid-40s, walked into the bank around 1 p.m. yesterday and demanded money from the teller.

The suspect "did get funds from bank, which have been recovered," Pleasants said, noting however that the exact amount of money taken cannot be released.

After entering the bank, the man slammed his fist on the teller window and broke the glass before he took the funds and ran out of the bank, Pleasants said. He was chased down and apprehended at the corner of 10-1/2 Street and Page Street by a joint force of Charlottesville police and Albemarle County sheriffs and police about 15 minutes later, Pleasants said. The man was unarmed, he added, and no one was injured during the incident.

After being taken into custody, the man refused to identify himself to local police and was unwilling to cooperate with authorities, Pleasants said, explaining that the man will remain in jail until he identifies himself.

"He has got to tell us who he is before he can get out of jail," Pleasants said.

Shortly after the robbery, the Bank of America branch closed for the rest of the day and redirected patrons to the Barracks Road branch, according to a sign posted outside the building.
