A University student was hit by a car Friday morning at 12:21 on Gordon Avenue. The student, first-year College student Jacob Hallman, suffered only minor injuries.
According to Charlottesville Police Sgt. Randall Higgins, the accident occurred near 1700 Gordon Ave.
"Based on the investigation [that took place], a 52-year-old Charlottesville man was driving west on Gordon Avenue when he saw several individuals quickly run out" into the street, Higgins said. The driver continued to move forward when Hallman suddenly ran out in front of his car.
The driver had no time to stop and hit Hallman, who said he was trying to catch up with his friends, Higgins said, noting Hallman also told Charlottesville police there was another car blocking his view.
No evidence suggested the involvement of alcohol in the accident, Higgins said.
Higgins noted Hallman was wearing a lacrosse helmet at the time of the accident, which may have both restricted his vision and prevented serious injury.
"He was lucky to have only suffered minor injuries, so he was not hospitalized," Higgins said. "It's probably a good thing he had a helmet on."
Hallman was charged with stepping into a highway, Higgins said, and he will have to appear at Charlottesville General District Court April 17.
