Pavilion VIII terrace apartment to open

The Pavilion VIII terrace apartment will have a new faculty resident next semester, said Alexander Gilliam, Board of Visitors secretary and special assistant to the president.

Pavilion VIII, he said, consists of one terrace apartment and another larger apartment on the upper floor. The pavilion differs from most, Gilliam explained, because the residencies are reserved for junior faculty only.

"The apartments are assigned for five years, and the lease cannot be renewed because the idea is to keep circulation," he said.

The lease of the current resident, Assoc. French Prof. Gladys Saunders, will expire next semester, and the provost's office, Gilliam said, is aware of the impending vacancy.

Saunders declined to comment on the matter, but Gilliam added that he will recommend junior faculty members for the apartment. The formal assignment, however, must be approved by the voting members of the Board.

Currently there is no set timetable to find a new lessor for Pavilion VIII, Gilliam said, adding that he hopes to have an assignment in place before the upcoming fall semester begins.
