Student allegedly abducted, robbed

A student reported that he was abducted and robbed from the 100 block of Rugby Road near the Corner area shortly after 11:30 p.m. Saturday night, according to a University Police press release.

The unidentified suspects took the victim into a vehicle and dropped him off on the side of a road in Albemarle County after taking his cell phone and wallet, the release stated.

While University Police Lieut. Melissa Fielding confirmed the reported abduction, she noted the case is currently under Charlottesville Police jurisdiction. The Charlottesville Police Department was unavailable to comment yesterday because it was an official City holiday in remembrance of Thomas Jefferson's birthday.

Aaron Laushway, associate dean of students and director of fraternity and sorority life urged students to remain cautious.

"Our students always need to be careful whether they are off Grounds or on Grounds," he said.

Laushway added that the University has a very competent police staff that fully cooperates with the Charlottesville Police Department to maintain the safety of University students.
