Shooting leaves male dead

Albemarle County Police responded to a reported shooting in the off-Grounds University Heights apartment community yesterday afternoon. The incident left one dead and two injured, Albemarle County Police Lieut. Todd Hopwood said.
Responding officers discovered a black male who sustained injuries by gunfire outside in the 260 block of Colonnade Drive, Hopwood said. That victim was transported to the University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
A second gunshot victim reportedly involved in the University Heights shooting incident then arrived at the University Hospital by private vehicle, Hopwood said. The second subject, also a black male, was treated for his injuries but remains at the University Hospital, according to Hopwood.
“His status and extent of injuries is unknown,” Hopwood said, reading an Albemarle County Police press release.
Also transported to the University Hospital was a third gunshot victim, a black male juvenile, Hopwood said. Further information regarding the third victim’s circumstances, including his condition and the extent of his injuries, is not available because of his status as a minor, Hopwood said.
The identities of the three victims are being withheld until family members are notified. Hopwood said he could neither confirm nor deny that any of the victims in the case nor any potential suspects are University students.
“No addition information is being released right now,” Hopwood said, citing the possibility of endangering his department’s ongoing investigation.
As of yesterday, portions of the University Heights community were cordoned off with yellow caution tape, and officers were still on the scene. According to Hopwood, the death of the first victim marked the first homicide reported in Albemarle County this year.
