Charlottesville Police responded to a shooting in Pacino’s Deli on the Corner at about 12:20 a.m. Sunday. The shooting resulted in one fatality, and three other people suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
According to a Charlottesville Police press release, 22-year-old Phillip E. Adams, Jr. was wounded in the chest and later died at the University Medical Center.
Twenty-year-old Darryl Andre Johnson has been identified as a suspect, according to the press release. According to NBC29 News, Johnson turned himself in late Sunday. He is facing charges of murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a murder, malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a malicious wounding, according the police press release.
The crime occurred in Pacino’s Deli, where space had been rented out for a private party. The assistant manager of Pacino’s, who wished to remain unnamed, noted that no University students were involved in the incident. He added that the party was responsible for its own security, and guests were patted down before entering. He said he was sitting in the deli when he heard five or six gunshots.
The assistant manager noted that his “heart breaks for [Adams’] family” and said during the 28 years he has been in the restaurant business, he had never before witnessed any kind of violence.
University spokesperson Carol Wood noted that “while Charlottesville is a safe area to live,” for the most part, students should use common sense both on and off Grounds, especially at night. She added the University encourages students to travel in groups at night and to take advantage of the various safety resources provided by the University.
