No. 15 Virginia was unable to defeat conference foe No. 9 Maryland last night, as the Cavaliers (19-6, 5-4 ACC) fell to the Terrapins (20-4, 8-2 ACC) 94-78 in College Park.
Despite the efforts of senior center Aisha Mohammed, who notched her ninth double-double of the season with 18 points and an impressive 17 rebounds, the Cavaliers were unable to mount a comeback as they had in their Jan. 30 89-81 upset of the Terps.
Unlike in recent games, however, other Cavaliers contributed significantly to Virginia’s offensive effort. As one might expect given her season-to-date statistics, junior guard Monica Wright followed Mohammed in the scoring column — tallying 14 points — but freshman guard Ariana Moorer and senior guard Britnee Millner also both notched double-figure scoring totals, adding 12 and 11 points, respectively. Senior forward Lyndra Littles, who has averaged 21.6 points per game this season, had what could be considered an off-night, however, as she managed only 11 points on 4-11 shooting from the field.
Virginia stayed with the Terps for the majority of the opening half — shooting a solid 42.1 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes of action — but the squad lost focus as the break drew near; Maryland made a 10-2 run at the end of the first period to enter the locker room up 44-39 at the break. The Cavaliers rebounded in the second half to take a 51-50 lead with 14:18 remaining, but the Terrapins overcame that slim deficit and closed out the win with efficient shot-making.
The Cavaliers are now 3-5 against ranked opponents as they prepare to take on N.C. State Sunday in the second match-up of a tough two-game road stretch.
