Cavaliers surprise No. 2 Wake Forest, snap streak

The No. 20 Virginia men's soccer team knocked off No. 2 Wake Forest 1-0 in Winston Salem, N.C. Friday night for its first ACC win of the season.

Buoyed by junior defender Mike Volk's first Virginia career goal, the team snapped the Demon Deacons' 35-game home win streak and improved to 4-1 (1-1 ACC) on the season.

Volk, who transferred from Rutgers last season, helped Virginia make the most of an early corner-kick opportunity in the 24th minute. Easily handling a serve from senior midfielder Neil Barlow, Volk struck a shot from close range that just made it across the goal line.

The Cavaliers' defense also significantly contributed to Virginia's win, as junior goalkeeper Diego Restrepo recorded five saves en route to his third shutout of the season - the first suffered by Wake Forest this year. Overall, the visitors outshot the Demon Deacons 14-13 to secure coach George Gelnovatch's 199th career victory.

Virginia will return home to face George Washington tomorrow at 7 p.m.
