Electrical malfunction sparks Corner fire

The Charlottesville Fire Department and Dominion Virginia Power successfully stopped an electrical fire from spreading into Christian's Pizza, located on the Corner, last Thursday night.

No fire actually started inside the restaurant, but Christian's Pizza and next-door Boylan Heights immediately evacuated their staff and customers, Boylan Heights owner Andrew Watson said.

Dominion Virginia Power shut down the section of the power grid that caused the fire, Watson said, and fire marshalsreinspected the buildings and sidewalks in the area.

"It seemed like the fire department got on it pretty quickly," Watson said. "It could have been bad outside, but inside [it was not] so bad."

An earlier sidewalk renovation at 14th Street may have been responsible for causing the small fire, Watson said.

"They put brick down and when they did it, they ended up clipping one of the electrical lines," Watson said. "For whatever reason [Thursday] night, it built up to a critical point where it started the electrical wires and sent the surge into Christian's Pizza."

Christian's Pizza and Boylan Heights re-opened for business Friday night.
