Dairy in your diet

Researcher Wendy Chan She Ping Delfos from Curtin University of Technology in Australia led a study comparing the effects of the normally suggested three servings of dairy food - such as yogurt, cheese and low fat milk - with five servings of dairy in a lower calorie diet in 40 obese patients during 12 weeks.

The study found that those who had the five daily servings of dairy lost more weight than those who consumed fewer servings. Study subjects who had five daily dairy servings also ended up having less stomach fat and lower blood pressure, which is critical to avoid heart disease and diabetes. The large amount of protein in cheese and other dairy products was also found to increase the body's metabolic activity. When combined with regular exercise, a diet high in dairy and low in calories was found to result in even more weight and fat loss. Dieters are still advised to watch their fat and calorie intake and to exercise regularly, but the study's results suggest that adding more dairy to one's diet may not be as bad as previously thought.
