University officials announced Wednesday additional plans for the ongoing restoration of Pavilion X.
The University contracted construction company Bensonwood to create a new parapet that will line the roof of the pavilion. The building has not had a parapet since the 1890s, when it was taken down for unknown reasons, University Senior Preservation Planner Brian Hogg said.
Currently, the company is working to refinish the columns and repaint the rest of the exterior.
The University chose to restore Pavillion X because it "could be a model for other pavilions," Hogg said.
Its location at the south end of the Lawn makes it ideal and easier to restore than other pavilions because it has only two adjacent student rooms, Hogg noted.
Bensonwood project manager Greg Boiles said the company is honored to work on a building designed by Thomas Jefferson.
"Just to have [our company's] reputation recognized and reinforced [is an honor]," he said.
Boiles said he believes his company was chosen because "we bring a lot of expertise on every project," adding that Bensonwood will use 3-D models to maintain the design's accuracy.
Nevertheless, Boiles said he believes the project could pose certain challenges because Pavilion X is a historic building, and "peculiarities" always arise during the completion of such projects.
The restoration is scheduled to finish this month, Hogg said.
