Virginia State Police are still hard at work trying to locate missing Virginia Tech student Morgan Dana Harrington, who disappeared during the Metallica concert at John Paul Jones Arena last Saturday. Though the investigation has yielded no evidence of foul play, the police are treating the case as a criminal investigation.
Police are "using the methodologies of a criminal investigation to insure that search and investigation are as thorough as possible," Virginia State Police spokesperson Corinne Geller said. Police also have expanded the area being searched.
"We keep expanding out, hoping nothing has been overlooked," Geller said.
Thus far, the police department has received between 130 and 140 leads via phone and e-mail, Geller said, up from about 100 as of Wednesday night. She added that the tips have been coming in from across the country, mostly because of the attention the investigation has generated from national news media outlets. Each tip is being assessed for validity, and some have led to additional searches in and around JPJ, she said.
The Virginia State Police requests that anyone with information about Harrington's whereabouts come forward and call the tip hotline at (434) 352-3467 or e-mail bci-appomattox@vsp.virginia.gov.
