New research suggests that verbalizing your thoughts while attempting to solve a problem - especially of the mathematical variety - can help to facilitate the process and lead to more correct answers. A study at the University of Granada in Spain found that final-year students of mathematics who detailed their problem-solving plan aloud while completing complex problems were more likely to correctly solve problems than those who did not. This research could potentially affect the way math is taught. Lead researcher and professor Jose Luis Villegas Castellanos of the University of the Andes, for instance, suggested the implementation of more discussion and pictorial representations of problems in the classroom.
