Led by Monica Wright's game-high 34 points, the No. 24 women's basketball team defeated Maryland yesterday 82-68. The win for the Cavaliers (17-6, 6-3 ACC) was the first in College Park, Md., since 2003 when the Cavaliers sneaked away with a 71-67 victory. Wright's 34 points moved her into fourth place on the ACC's all-time scoring list with 2,327 overall. Virginia got out to a quick lead to begin the game and racked up a 10-point lead just eight minutes into the first half. The Terrapins (16-8, 3-6 ACC) fought back, however, and closed the deficit to three by the break. Then, from the beginning of the second half, Wright took command and scored 12 consecutive points to keep the Cavaliers ahead for good. The ACC Preseason Player of the Year finished 11-20 from the field and went 10-11 from the free throw line.
