BOV selects Ackerly as student member

New representative views position as chance to convey broad spectrum of persectives

The Board of Visitors appointed second-year Law student Stewart Ackerly as its new student member at its Thursday meeting. Ackerly will replace outgoing student member Rahul Gorawara, who attended his final Board meeting Friday.

Although he will not be permitted to vote on any Board decisions, Ackerly will attend the Board's meetings, during which he will participate in its discussions as a representative of the undergraduate and graduate student bodies.

"It really seems like an opportunity to make a real difference and ensure that a broad spectrum of perspectives is represented in these meetings," Ackerly said.

Ackerly was chosen from a group of 25 applicants, Secretary to the Board Susan Harris said. The paper applications were reviewed by a committee of student leaders, several students at large, Harris and Pat Lampkin, vice president and chief student affairs officer. The Board's executive committee then chose Ackerly and two other students for interviews.

Ackerly graduated from the College in 2006. As an undergraduate student, he was involved with the Honor Committee, in which he served as the vice chair for trials and the College representative.

After taking two years off from school, the Richmond native returned to Charlottesville in 2008, when he entered the Law School. He currently is a peer adviser and a member of the Virginia Law Review.

As the Board's newly chosen student representative, Ackerly is excited to represent the student body in an even greater capacity.

"That's something I'm really looking forward to doing again - to make sure the student body is adequately represented," he said.
