Charlottesville expands park land

The Charlottesville Park System will receive an additional 27 acres from local organizations to aid stream restoration projects and the city's trail development.

Eighteen acres of land in the Meadow Creek Stream Valley were donated by Charlottesville firm Ja-Zan LLZ. Six more acres were donated by the Locust Meadow Land Trust, and the final two were purchased from a landowner for $10,300.

The Meadow Creek Stream Valley acreage is essential to a stream restoration project along Hydraulic Road ending near the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks, said Brian Daly, director of parks and recreation for the City of Charlottesville.

"It's good land management to be in public hands," he said. "We're looking for urban forests and creek side lands. Bringing stream valley lands to the park system is critical to environmental goals and developments as a whole."

Chris Gensic, parks and trails planner for the city, said the trail aspect of the new park was conceived in 2005. When Gensic was hired in 2006, he immediately began contacting property owners with expansion in mind. The additional acreage will facilitate these expansion efforts.
