Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a digestive system condition that involves abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and constipation. Luckily for those afflicted with this condition, Dr. Roland Valori of Gloucestershire Royal Hospital seems to have found a treatment: hypnotherapy. This technique first was used during the early 19th century but has been in and out of use in the medical world ever since. During hypnotherapy sessions, people can somewhat control their gut functions by mentally influencing how digestive processes are processed in the brain. When 100 subjects were tested, nine out of 10 patients experienced significantly lessened symptoms, and symptoms were completely alleviated for four out of 10. Most subjects reported greater ability to manage stress. Proponents of hypnotherapy believe this method is a less expensive alternative treatment for IBS, but the level to which it will help depends on the skill level and experience of the practitioner.
