Make a commitment to The Good Wife

Golden Globe winner Julianna Margulies confronts domestic scandal in this high-stakes courtroom drama

During the last year or so on the TV airwaves, we've seen the debuts of some great shows, such as Royal Pains on the USA Network and Castle on ABC. One of the best new shows to start this season has been CBS' The Good Wife. Ever since 2005, when JAG ended and Joan of Arcadia was canceled - one of the worst cancellations ever! - CBS has been mired in somewhat of a primetime slump. This new show could lead them to a comeback.

The Good Wife is set in Cook County, Ill., where State Attorney Peter Florrick (Chris Noth) has resigned amid allegations that he traded appointments to high-ranking offices for sexual favors. His wife Alicia (Julianna Margulies) reluctantly stays with him and returns to work as a junior associate at the law firm Stern, Lockhart & Gardner. The show revolves around cases she is assigned, as well as Peter's quest for a new trial to clear his name. Alicia soon finds herself competing with fellow junior associate Cary Agos (Matt Czuchry) when she realizes there is only one permanent position for the two of them. Peter, meanwhile, ends up butting heads with his replacement as state attorney, Glenn Childs (Titus Welliver), who contributed to Peter's ousting by releasing tapes of his sexual affairs to the public.

Perhaps the best part of the series is Margulies' spot-on acting as she portrays Alicia. This performance earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series-Drama and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series. Marguiles, after all, does a great job of showing the many pressures and challenges that her character faces. Alicia has to deal not only with her husband's infidelity but also returns to work after having been a stay-at-home mom to their two children Zach
