Rotunda column cracks will be repaired shortly

The University recently discovered cracks in the Rotunda's columns, the cause of which is unknown. Black netting has been placed over the cracks to protect the columns and prevent the situation from worsening, said Brian Hogg, senior historic preservation planner for the University.

It is unclear when or how the cracks originated.

"We found some small cracks in the marble, so as a precautionary measure while we are evaluating them, we have put netting on them," Hogg said. "We are still waiting for a report from a conservator and a structural engineer who have come to look at the cracks."

Hogg dispelled any concerns that the column work will affect commencement in May.

"The netting will be off by graduation time," Hogg said.
