Seniors lead way to ninth-place finish

Virginia women's swimming coach Mark Bernardino said before this year's NCAA Championships that a top-10 finish would be "very special for our program."

With 151 points, the Cavaliers finished the meet ninth overall, ahead of every other ACC team and only two points behind eighth-place Auburn, which finished with 153 points.

As part of the most successful senior class in program history, Mel Christensen, Jenna Harris, Katherine McDonnell and Jen Narum stood out in both individual events and relays. Christensen earned All-American accolades for her fourth-place finish in the 100-meter back and for touching fifth in the 200 back.

Christensen and McDonnell, with sophomore Lauren Smart and freshman Lauren Perdue, earned a noteworthy fifth place in the 400 medley relay, which added to the team's list of All-American performances.

Perdue's fifth-place finish in the 50 free, eighth-place finish in the 100 free and 14th-place finish in the 200 free placed her in the All-American category. Olson earned an All-American honorable mention with her showing in the 200 breast.

The performance was the team's highest ever finish at the NCAAs since 1988, when the Cavaliers placed seventh.
