Parking prices to remain steady for another year

The department of Parking and Transportation plans to maintain most of its parking prices for the 2010-11 academic year. The one price change will occur in the Medical Center, where parking prices will increase from $75 per month to $80 dollars per month, starting June 1.

The price increase for the Medical Center will occur in part because of the greater number of parking garages located there, White said. This difference correlates to higher maintenance costs.\nOverall, however, the department has been relatively successfully in keeping parking prices steady for the last four years.

"It has been an attempt to recognize the impact of parking rates on employees," Director of Parking and Transportation Rebecca White said. "We know employees haven't had raises in a while, and we're trying to keep that in mind."

Parking spots fall into a number of categories, from commuter and storage spots to premium reserved locations. Currently, parking prices start at $16 per month for the storage and commuter parking, while mid-priced parking is set at $39 per month, and premium parking is set at $49 per month, White said.

Despite the recently steady pricing for parking, changes may be possible in the future.

"I predict, given the age of the parking garages on the academic campus, that we will not be able to hold prices steady in the future," White said. "I suspect there's going to be a 5-10 percent rise in parking prices. Hopefully this will influence commuters to research alternative transportation, like the Charlottesville transit system or carpool options."
