Center for Politics releases book, online midterm election guide website in effort to educate voters in advance of November races

Politics Prof. Larry Sabato, director of the University's Center for Politics, has developed a reputation as one of the most frequently quoted college professors in the nation, and is famous for his Crystal Ball predictions, which were 99 percent accurate in projecting outcomes in the 2006 and 2008 elections.

This election cycle, Sabato is also starting a new site, www.getinthebooth2010.com, which will provide the public with information about the midterm elections. Additionally, he and the Center for Politics are releasing a new book, "Get In The Booth: A Citizen's Guide to the 2010 Midterm Elections," which accompanies the site and includes chapters by Sabato and other contemporary political scholars.

"In this latest book, Sabato provides an introduction to the 2010 midterm election, encouraging readers to 'Get in the Booth!' and discusses the inevitability of a 'Pendulum Swing' in American politics," according to a press release.

'Pendulum Swing' refers to Sabato's chapter in the book, which discusses the phenomenon in which the outcomes of the midterm elections reflect judgments and decisions the current president made during the previous two years.

The website includes a countdown to the midterm election and aims to "discuss the most salient political, social, and economic issues affecting the 2010 midterm election."

"Political scientists have come to realize that campaign outcomes for Congress, governors and even thousands of state legislative posts around the country have a strong relationship to the voters' level of approval for the White House administration," Sabato wrote in 'Pendulum Swing.'

The book's publisher, Pearson/Longman, is offering free online access to the book through the new website.

"It's not often that a publishing company is willing to release a book without charging for it. So I hope students in particular will take advantage of these free electronic resources, and after reading contributions from many of the top experts working in public policy and politics, they will be encouraged to Get in the Booth!," Sabato said in an e-mail.

In addition, the Center for Politics has released a new Google Gadget, a miniature Web object which websites can insert on their pages, allowing them to provide the latest projections from Sabato's Crystal Ball to their readers. It will combine Sabato's current Crystal Ball predictions with Google Maps to present election districts shaded according to the Crystal Ball ratings, which will be updated daily.
