Amid torrential downpour in College Park, the No. 6 Virginia women's soccer team suffered its first ACC loss on the season last night, falling 3-2 to No. 5 Maryland.
The Terrapins (9-0-1, 1-0-1 ACC) jumped out to an early lead, scoring a goal within the first three minutes of the first half. Maryland maintained the lead through the first half and into the second until sophomore forward Caroline Miller found the net during the 50th minute to tie the match. Just two minutes later, however, Maryland responded with a goal off a penalty kick.
A Terrapin handball during the 66th minute gave Virginia (7-2-1, 1-1-0 ACC) a penalty kick of its own, and senior forward Meghan Lenzyck capitalized on the opportunity to knot the score at two apiece.
Maryland struck what proved to be the decisive goal eight minutes later and held on for the victory. The Cavaliers outshot the Terrapins 17-9 on the night and held a 5-3 corner kick advantage.
