Cornell is known as the Big Red, but the coaching staff of its men's tennis team is almost entirely orange and blue. Head coach Tony Bresky served as associate head coach at Virginia for eight years before accepting the coaching job at Cornell last year. Assistant coach Houston Barrick went 60-0 in ACC play during four seasons at Virginia and captained the team during its NCAA semifinal run last year.
But despite being led by a former coach and former player who have both seen a great deal of Virginia's top six singles players, No. 66 Cornell (4-1) was unable to make a dent in Virginia's lineup Friday evening, losing 7-0 during the first round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend at the Boar's Head Sports Club. Virginia, the nation's top-ranked team, went on to win the four-team tournament, defeating No. 51 East Tennessee State, 7-0, Saturday evening. The wins earned the Cavaliers (6-0) a berth in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in February.
At No. 1 singles, Cornell's Andy Gauthier pushed Virginia senior Michael Shabaz at various points during their match, playing him close during the first set then reaching a tiebreak during the second. Shabaz closed on big points, however, and won the match, 6-3, 7-6 (6).
