The Virginia women's basketball team won a nail-biter for the second straight game, a vital 60-57 victory at No. 11 Maryland Sunday afternoon at the Comcast Center.
Virginia (15-12, 4-7 ACC) dropped a Jan. 21 overtime affair, 77-75, to the then-No. 14 Terrapins (20-5, 6-4 ACC) in front of a disappointed home crowd.
After willing themselves through an incredible quadruple-overtime 94-92 victory at N.C. State last Thursday, the Cavaliers were eager to exact revenge against the Terrapins.
Leading 58-55 with 1:17 remaining in regulation, Virginia found itself in a situation similar to the January contest between the two teams. Virginia - wary of surrendering the tying three-point shot - conceded a layup to Maryland junior guard Anjale Barrett with 12 seconds remaining that brought the Terrapins within one.
After successfully inbounding the ball, Virginia junior guard Whitny Edwards made two clutch free throws with 11.2 seconds remaining to push the Cavaliers' lead back to three, 60-57. Maryland missed a three-point attempt at the buzzer, and Virginia survived for the upset victory it needed to improve both its seeding for the ACC Tournament positioning and its chance for a NCAA Tournament berth.
Junior guard Ariana Moorer, Virginia's buzzer-beating heroine against N.C. State, led all scorers with 17 points. Freshman forward Alyssa Thomas led Maryland with 14 points and eight rebounds.\nThe Cavaliers have the week off before hosting Boston College at home Sunday. Tip-off for that game is set for 1 p.m.
