Pretty Little Liars

Teen murder mystery features drama-filled guilty pleasure

Confession: I am addicted to ABC Family's Pretty Little Liars, and if you've ever seen it, you can't deny that you are too. I can't say for certain what it is that urges me to watch it obsessively each week, but here are a few potential reasons: the profusion of unrealistically beautiful people, the hippest clothes that I never would dare attempt to wear, the deliciously enthralling and cliff-hanging plot lines or maybe the sheer talent of the actors. Wait - scratch that last one. Pretty Little Liars is essentially Gossip Girl, but with murderers thrown into the mix. And like Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars is loosely based on a series of novels - keyword: loosely - by author Sara Shepard. It is also the ultimate guilty pleasure.

The story goes like this: A group of girlfriends reunites one year after their queen bee, Alison, goes missing. The show picks up when Alison's body is found and the girls begin receiving threatening and omniscient messages from the mysterious "A," who seems to be watching their every move and who knows every dirty little secret that only Alison knew. The rest of the plot is built upon the girls' quest to unveil the identity of Alison's murderer as well as "A" - are they one in the same? - while doing their best to keep their own reputations clean.
