The Minority Rights Coalition elected its new executive board this past Saturday, choosing third-year College student Evan Shields as chair for the 2011-12 year.
Shields will replace outgoing MRC Chair Heba Tellawi, who said she is eager to see the newly elected officials begin their terms.
"Everyone, including myself, is extremely excited about the new executive board and how they want to implement their ideas," Tellawi said. "I think they're going to play a very important role in the community here."
The MRC community includes multiple organizations focused on advocating for for minority groups on Grounds, such as the American Indian Student Union, the Asian Student Union, the Black Student Alliance, Feminism is for Everyone, Latino Student Alliance, Middle Eastern Leadership Council and the Queer Student Union.
One of the ideas Shields hopes to implement is an increased sense of unity between all of the MRC's member organizations, he said. "In general I want to expand the focus and expand the reach of MRC next year," he said. "I want to work to connect the member groups like never before. I'm hoping to strike a balance between building these relationships [with administration and other organizations on grounds] and advocating for those issues which confront our member organizations and which we find particularly pertinent."
Working with Shields to accomplish these goals in the upcoming year will be second-year College student Zain Shaikh, who will replace fourth-year College student Rikhi Anandsongkit as vice chair, and first-year College student Marshay Clarke, who will replace second-year College student Katherine Mayfield and third-year College student Karmen Story as programs coordinator.\n"Zain and I have worked together this past year on Student Council," Shields said. "I look forward to working with him and the other executive members"
