Love Connection: Patrick and Melanie

Melanie:\nU.Va. involvement and activities: Inter-Sorority Council, Chi Omega, The Monroe Society, Madison House (Adopt a Grandparent and YMCA Daycare)

Ideal date: Caucasian, dark hair, on the taller side (5-foot-10) ... Someone who is outgoing and social, involved and hard-working

Ideal date Location: Definitely dinner at a place that has a relaxed environment ... Nothing that adds too much pressure.

Ideal celebrity: Bradley Cooper

Typical weekend plans: A typical weekend for me would include going out with friends and doing something fun. I like to go on adventures.

How important is physical fitness?: I work out on occasion and enjoy playing sports on a recreational level.

Favorite music: I listen to pretty much every genre apart from heavy metal.

Favorite C'ville restaurant: Mas.

Best five minutes: The best five minutes of my life were when I received my acceptance into U.Va. I had fallen in love with the University and was so nervous that I would not be accepted. I felt like I had accomplished something incredible.

What makes you a good catch?: I am an outgoing person who likes to have a good time. I love meeting new people and think that I present myself well. I am also open minded and really motivated.

Tell a joke: My life is actually a joke, so I find most of it amusing. I think that going with the flow and laughing things off whether it is an uncomfortable situation or things do not go as planned is a good way to live your life.

Deal breakers in a date: Smoker, heavy drug user, shy personality

What would you change About yourself?: I think that if there is one thing I could change about myself, I would change the fact that I find myself caring too much about what other people think of me.

Post-graduation plans: I am currently looking for jobs in the D.C. area to work for the government.

Best and least favorite part of the University: I cannot single out one favorite aspect of U.Va. because I love everything about it. There are very few things that I can complain about and I have loved my experience here.

How would best friend describe you?: Loyal, outgoing, honest.

If you could time travel to any period, when would it be and why?: Colonial America because I think it would be a unique time period to visit and it would be interesting to see the hard work people put into building our country.

Patrick:\nU.Va. involvement and activities: Global Water Brigades (vice president), previously in the marching band.

Hobbies: Play basketball, exercise/work out, hang with friends, watch football, ski, go to bars, video games, go to the beach, paddlesurf

Ideal Date: Preferably white, any height, any hair color (though I bias against my own type slightly, redheaded). A fun, kinky personality, able to take and maybe add to jokes, smart but yet street smart. I enjoy someone who is athletic and likes physical fitness like I do.

Ideal Date Location: Indoors, preferably at a restaurant

Ideal Celebrity: Hayden Panettiere. She's (or at least looks like) an all-American girl, and she's gorgeous. Also, from how she acted in "Remember the Titans," that's my kind of girl!

Typical Weekend Plans: I go to every football game and generally party once or twice a weekend. I spend most of my Sundays doing work, and also watching football while I work (of course, less attention is paid to football than my work). Free time on Friday and Saturday are spent with friends, hanging out or playing video games.

How important is physical fitness?: Physical fitness is extremely important in my life; I've been an athlete since as long as I can remember and continued it with the crew team at U.Va. until the end of my first year, when I decided grades were more important than the sport.

Favorite TV Shows: Family Guy, Conan, Futurama, Entourage

Favorite Music: Rock, pop/rock, alternative, some country, pop, some hip-hop

Favorite Books: The Lords of Discipline

Favorite C'ville Restaurant: The Melting Pot

Best five minutes: The Muse concert at JPJ Oct. 27, jumping with everyone and listening to one of the best bands on the planet.

What makes you a good catch?: I'm tall, athletic, smart, going to be a doctor (most likely), compassionate and a good boyfriend - I generally do sweet things for girls I really like.

What would you want your date to have in common with you?: I would hope hobbies, possibly political alignment (I tend to swing more conservative) and a goofy sense of humor.

Personal theme song: Walking on Sunshine - because I'm generally always happy

Tell a Joke: Oh, I don't tell jokes. I generally just say things during conversations that make light of a situation, or exaggerate it to the point of hilarity. My humor isn't witty, but rather silly or goofy.\nDeal breakers in a date: Smoking, weight, looks, dull personality

What would you change about yourself?: My ability to not put on muscle that well - I may be strong, but my body doesn't show it well. No guns for me.

Best and least favorite part of the University: The social life and the people here are fantastic. My least favorite thing is the fact that the major sports teams have been disappointing me.

How would your best friend describe you?: Reliable, dependable, a small space-case but a great friend.

If you could time travel to any period, when would it be and why?: Forward by 300 years to see what has become of our Earth. I'd like to see what problems plague humans in 300 years that could be prevented now, and I'd like to also see if space travel is possible (especially for recreation).

Patrick: I basically filled the survey out on a whim. I've been reading Love Connection since I was a first year, and I glance at it every so often to see what happens. I figured what the hell, it's a free date and it'll probably be a good experience.

Melanie: I heard about Love Connection through a friend at the Cav Daily who suggested that I apply for it and said that it's really fun. I was really excited when I got the email about going on the date, and I told my roommates, who thought it was hilarious. They joked that they were going to stalk me at dinner.

Patrick: I tend to be early to everything, so when I got there 10 minutes early and she was a minute or two late, I started thinking "Oh my god, what if she doesn't show up?" I got the email from Love Connection on April Fool's Day so I was afraid that this was some cruel prank by the Cav Daily.

Melanie: We ran into each other and introduced ourselves outside of Basil. I'd never been on a blind date, so I didn't know what to expect and I was nervous, but in an excited way. Since this wasn't a normal blind date through friends, I was afraid there was going to be some awkwardness, but there wasn't.

Patrick: I thought she was cute, and she had a nice body. Yeah, I definitely thought she was attractive. In terms of being my type, she's around 5-foot-6, which is good since I can't date really short girls because of my height.

Melanie: My first impression of him was that he was really friendly and warm. He was cute and really tall, and his personality was so awesome that it made the first meeting go really well.

Patrick: We were both nervous since it was a blind date. I told her that I really didn't want to sound stupid and she said not to worry, that she probably would too. Then we went inside the restaurant, got a table and ordered a bottle of wine.

Melanie: We're both outgoing, so we immediately started talking and there was never an awkward silence. We did all the getting to know you sort of stuff and talked about a lot about our families, school and what activities we're involved in. We found out we're both from Pennsylvania, which was cool because it's always fun to meet someone from home as an out-of-state student.

Patrick: We talked about our interests and found out that we're into really different things - we're in different majors, she's in a sorority and I'm not in a frat, and I'm going to med school and she wants to work for the government - but it's always nice to meet someone who's passionate about things like you are.

Melanie: We have similar outlooks on life, which is cool. He also used to be in the band with one of my roommates so that was interesting. It's good to know we have friends in common. We were having a lot of fun, and we laughed about our waiter, who was... interesting.

Patrick: Our waiter was definitely strange. He was trying to be way too proper, and we gave each other funny looks, like "What is this guy doing?" The date had a friendly vibe. I'm too afraid to go out and start flirting with someone right away, so at the time, I wasn't thinking about it evolving past friendship. After dinner, we went outside and she asked for my number. I was going to ask her, but she jumped right on it.

Melanie: I had a really good time, and I'm glad that I had a good experience with it because these things could go one of two ways, but thankfully we have personalities that meshed well. He was cool and there's potential for a second date, but we are graduating soon. I would rate the date an 8. It was nice to meet someone who I probably wouldn't have met otherwise during my last few weeks at school.

Patrick: It was a really good date. If 1 is a situation where it's like "Get me out of here!" and 10 is being completely infatuated, I'd give it an 8. Overall it went smoothly and wasn't awkward. She's really open and friendly, and it was a pleasant surprise to randomly meet someone this way and have them be just as kind and caring as I could hope for them to be.

Melanie and Patrick have been texting since the date, and Patrick said he probably will ask her to hang out again.
