Who: European Space Agency and its Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer
What: The release of the most detailed geoid model to date. A geoid model is a representation of the earth that follows the average ocean surface if the oceans extended across the continents, disregarding tides, currents and crust features. In other words, it maps the shape the earth would take based on its existing gravitational field without the distortion of geological features.
The Future: Many believe the detailed model of the geoid is key to understanding atmospheric conditions and climate change. It is difficult to measure things such as ocean dynamics without having an accurate reference point to start from, one which the geoid can provide.
