The No. 14 Virginia women's soccer team notched its first-ever win against No. 5 North Carolina Sunday in the 38 meetings between the two schools.
Despite a low scoring game between the ACC's two highest scoring offenses, the Cavaliers pulled off an exciting victory as junior forward Caroline Miller scored her 10th goal of the season in double overtime to steal a 1-0 win. Miller's 10 goals are the most of any Virginia player this season.
The Tar Heels won the statistical battle Sunday afternoon by holding a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks and outshooting the Cavaliers 11-10 to become the first team to outshoot Virginia all season.
Neither team could find the back of the net until the 105th minute when freshman midfielder Morgan Brian gave Miller a beautifully placed ball that snuck through North Carolina's back line. Miller did the rest, putting the ball past North Carolina sophomore goalkeeper Anna Sieloff, who made two saves on the day. The game was the first nationally televised game of the season for the Cavaliers, who played in front of an audience of 1,418 at North Carolina's Fetzer Field.
Virginia continues its four-game road trip Thursday at 8 p.m. against No. 4 Duke.
