Student Council discussed last night the agenda for the 2011 Homecoming events, which will take place the week following Fall Break and culminate in the Oct. 15 football game against Georgia Tech. University Programs Council is co-sponsoring the events.
The theme for the week will be "Virginia Homecomings: The Tradition Returns" and was designed by Council Marketing and Communications Chair Eric McDaniel, who worked with Athletic Affairs Chair Ben Powell.
Powell said the University has not put much effort into Homecoming since around 2006.
"Some of us on Student Council last year realized that during Homecoming week not very much was happening, if anything at all," Powell said. "We asked a bunch of students if they wanted to see Homecoming become a big deal and everyone responded they did."
The week's events include a dorm spirit banner competition, a visit to Observatory Hill Dining Hall by football Coach Mike London and a concert in the Amphitheater.
Powell looked to other large universities for inspiration, particularly Baylor University and the University of Florida. They often hold major concerts or parades to publicize the events, he said. Powell said these activities were too much to implement in the first year of bringing back Virginia Homecoming, but he hopes to build up events throughout the next five years which will potentially match these.
"We're hoping to have a giant concert in either [John Paul Jones Arena] or even Scott Stadium the night before the game [in five years' time]," Powell said. "[We want] something we can point to and say, 'This is why I'm proud to go to the University of Virginia."
