Report details FOIA problems

Progressive group responds to conservative ideologues in support of former University Prof. Michael Mann

The progressive American Constitution Society for Law and Policy released an analysis last week outlining ways states and state institutions could circumvent the "politically-motivated" attempts by conservative groups to obtain emails and documents of faculty members at public universities.

The analysis was conducted in part as a response to the ongoing efforts of the American Tradition Institute to access the documents of former University Environmental Sciences Prof. Michael Mann.\nATI has already secured nearly 4,000 pages of Mann's materials through a Freedom of Information Act request, and could obtain more than 5,000 additional pages as early as next week, pending the result of Mann's challenge in court to deny ATI access to the documents.

Mann taught at the University from 1999 to 2005, when he conducted influential climate change research that provides a basis for theories of global warming. ATI questions the accuracy of Mann's research.

The analysis noted other FOIA requests at the University of Wisconsin, University of Michigan, Michigan State University and Wayne State University.
